Prohibition was a ban on alcohol that became law in 1920. It was a movement that called for a ban on making, selling, and distributing alcoholic beverages. Because of prohibition many problems arose. Speakeasies were formed, crime rates rose, and gangs grew.
Speakeasies were illegal bars where alcohol was being served. The federal government had to shut down many speakeasies and they had more than 3,000 prohibition agents working nationwide. It was very difficult for agents to enforce the law because there were so many people going to speakeasies. More and more alcohol was being brought into speakeasies and more speakeasies were being formed. The government could not control them.
After prohibition became law, crime rates rose and gangs grew. Gangs grew because they were making and selling alcohol to people. Some gangs wanted to eliminate the competition of selling alcohol so they started having gang wars. Many people died because of this. Also this increased crime rates because many people were getting shot and killed by gang who wanted to sell alcohol and make money.
